After the first rush of passengers crossed the gangway, Mary got up, still with valise pressed close to her chest, and hobbled towards the exit. Hobbled because the suitcase was large and heavy. A member of the ship’s crew saw her struggling, took the case from her and walked her off the ship and onto Australian soil.
