A strange choice of photo, I know (!) but I thought this image best shows what the moments after a night patrol were really like… Here, I’ve just returned from the 10pm - 2am shift with Georgie.
The turtles don’t care where they’re flicking the sand, they just want to cover their nest and camouflage it, and when we’re in the sand with them, trying to measure them and run a body check, this is what happens. Sand EVERYWHERE. Sand in the mouth, eyes, ears, around the neck and in the hair. It’s a messy, messy business. I was so grateful for long showers when we got back to our house at night.
